What Do We Hold Sacred?

Lacking time to search out another whiff of mystical sewer gas this morning,
forensicpoetry reluctantly lifts the left rear corner of his desk and kicks out a
folded piece of paper that he'd stuck there to keep his work "on the level." [smile]

He remembers the sheet of paper well. On it, a sonnet he'd composed around
the time of "Doublemeat Palace" . . . He begins retyping them into his laptop:

What Do We Hold Sacred?

{BVS_003_01.01} I HOPE IT'S FAIR TO SAY we're not "just fans."

{BVS_003_01.02} Our "group identity" does not require

{BVS_003_01.03} a thoughtless positive that squelches pans --

{BVS_003_01.04} won't blindly "worship" that which is our sire.

{BVS_003_01.05} Where Buffy's beauty shines, we PRAISE its light,

{BVS_003_01.06} and where a bulb has dimmed, PLEAD "Swap it out!"

{BVS_003_01.07} It's not for Buffy's honor that we fight

{BVS_003_01.08} with pointy language -- yet we are devout ...

{BVS_003_01.09} ... to what the Vampire Slayer has aspired.

{BVS_003_01.10} AND SHOULD good Whedon's team forsake their vows

{BVS_003_01.11} and lose their cool, clear vision -- become mired

{BVS_003_01.12} on paths less beautiful -- we won't be cows.

{BVS_003_01.13} A fealty to the highest quality:

{BVS_003_01.14} the Buffyverse depends on you and me.

If you wander into many (most?) online forums where fans
of a TV series gather ... especially Buffy fans [smile] ...
you will usually find a great deal of intolerance of criticism.
"If you don't like it, why do you watch?" they'll (often) say,
and (often) get downright angry.
Which brings us to Season 6 ... during which many long-time
"fans" found a lot of things not to like about the writing.
Hence this sonnet ... Some rhetoric [smile] to pave the way
for more "balanced" discussion. BUT let me make very clear that
personal argument ... even if "civil" ... is never "fruitful."
Express your judgement as a PUBLIC ARGUMENT ... addressed to
your fellow citizens. ALL of them. Not Joe, or Susie. I under-
stand this is NOT STANDARD PROCEDURE for online conversation.
I'm saying it should be. (yada yada yada deleted)
BIG FINAL POINT [smile]: The most "controversial" idea here
is that the QUALITY of a TV drama series can (should) be
effected by viewers ... NOT just the choices of the "genius"
(gag me) WRITER/ARTIST/CREATOR. (And let's just let that sit
there for now. [smile] But that WAS THE POINT of ALL of "this" ...
when I started...)
Oh [ewg] there is this point: If you want to give your input
to a creative project ... you ought to have to "work" a bit ...
making your input "artistic." [smile] Like, in sonnet form.
