ALL-MUSICAL[S] BUFFY

rhetorical verse in Shakespearean sonnet form
(a 4-sonnet sequence)

{BVS_009_01.01} ONCE MORE WITH FEELING'S FIRST SONG |

won my heart.

{BVS_009_01.02} A balanced blend of action with a tune_{song}

{BVS_009_01.03} in Whedon's perfect key -- both fun and smart.

{BVS_009_01.04} Yes, "Going Through The Motions"|

made me swoon.

{~~came on strong~~}

{BVS_009_01.05} BUT NOW, I MUST ADMIT, the first time through

{BVS_009_01.06} ONCE MORE WITH FEELING, |

I was not quite pleased:

{BVS_009_01.07} Too many of the songs seemed like a stew

{BVS_009_01.08} of private thoughts -- while its_{the} plot engine seized.

{BVS_009_01.09} BUT: sing-while-slaying vampires|

pumps_{keeps} the flow

{BVS_009_01.10} of Buffy gasoline, and fires the spark-

{BVS_009_01.11} plugs of the joys we "watchers" all well know --

{BVS_009_01.12} when B-style heart and humor hit the mark.

{BVS_009_01.13} A SECOND VIEWING made me like them all.

{BVS_009_01.14} BUT STILL, beyond the first song, |

came a fall.

{BVS_010_02.01} I BRING THIS UP TODAY not to rehash

{BVS_010_02.02} our various opinions of those songs.

{BVS_010_02.03} BUT RATHER: Should one musical |

just flash

{BVS_010_02.04} before our eyes? |

(One King 'midst many Kongs?)

{BVS_010_02.05} I MEAN, I think |

the musical form |

fits

{BVS_010_02.06} the Buffy evolutionary path.

{BVS_010_02.07} Song resurrects the tone we've loved |

-- reknits

{BVS_010_02.08} the Buffy tapestry. AND like a bath . . .

{BVS_010_02.09} . . . that's Spiked_{smile}|

with many champagne sips |

-- a blast.

{BVS_010_02.10} Yes, wash 6th-Season sadness |

with the fun

{BVS_010_02.11} of musicals each week, |

until the last

{BVS_010_02.12} of Buffy's twisting marathon's been run.

{BVS_010_02.13} I HEAR JOSS SCREAM: "Good Lord! |

Are you insane?

{BVS_010_02.14} A musical each week?!?! |

You should be slain!"

{BVS_011_03.01} BUT GATHERING MY DUST up off the floor

{BVS_011_03.02} (like Dracula)_{{"Dracula" BtVS 5.1}} |

I boldly stand my ground.

{BVS_011_03.03} I call to Joss, but he's run out the door

{BVS_011_03.04} and left the show in Marti's hands. The sound . . .

{BVS_011_03.05} . . . of Noxon's voice still echoing her line

{BVS_011_03.06} to Once More's parking cop -- no "underwear,"

{BVS_011_03.07} she sang suggestively to beat the fine

{BVS_011_03.08} right after it's not "right, it isn't fair."

{BVS_011_03.09} WHAT CRAZY verse is this? What do I mean?

{BVS_011_03.10} I MEAN: Considering that Noxon sings, ...

{BVS_011_03.11} (yes, that was her -- the parking ticket scene)

{BVS_011_03.12} Let Buffy fly on aria-laced wings!

{BVS_011_03.13} A DISTANT JOSS YELLS OUT:|

"But there's no time

{BVS_011_03.14} to write|

new weekly melodies and rhyme."

{BVS_012_04.01} I DODGE HIS 'STAKE' AND SHOUT: |

"Well, so says you!"_{grin}

{BVS_012_04.02} I hear a laugh . . . then laughter from each side.

{BVS_012_04.03} (And you -- I see you there -- you're laughing, too.)

{smile}

{BVS_012_04.04} But laughter's a good thing. I let it ride... / / /

{BVS_012_04.05} 'THE GRACE OF GREAT THINGS' first |

may sound quite strange.

{BVS_012_04.06} A Buffy that's all musicals |

sounds nuts.

{BVS_012_04.07} (And Cop Rock tried it. That dead dog had mange.)

{BVS_012_04.08} Oh yes, I know there are a thousand "buts" ...

{BVS_012_04.09} HOWEVER ... I STILL SAY |

-- AND THIS IS KEY --

{BVS_012_04.10} the truest Buffy spirit |

takes song's form.

{BVS_012_04.11} Sometimes it's through Bronze singers' eyes we see

{BVS_012_04.12} the beauty of the Buffyverse -- the storm ...

{BVS_012_04.13} ... of pure emotion washing through the night.

{BVS_012_04.14} Once More . . . had hints of greatness. |

But not quite.
