(BUFFY-VERSE SERIES) SONNETS #096-104 of 154
BUFFY-DREAMS

rhetorical verse in Shakespearean sonnet form
(a 9-sonnet sequence)

 }
{BVS_096_01.01} THE EPISODE BEGINS IN BUFFY'S DREAM

{BVS_096_01.02} Drusilla. Willow. Monkey without pants.

{BVS_096_01.03} Her mother's broken cup. And Buffy's scream

{BVS_096_01.04} as Spike's mad paramour kills her romance.

{BVS_096_01.05} Her Angel turns to dust -- his fingertips

{BVS_096_01.06} fall from her grasp. Drusilla wishes her

{BVS_096_01.07} a "happy birthday" as the horror rips

{BVS_096_01.08} our heroine from dreamland's aquifer.

{BVS_096_01.09} The stratum down below our consciousness

{BVS_096_01.10} where flow is unimpeded by constraint

{BVS_096_01.11} of reason's narrow channels which compress

{BVS_096_01.12} (ubiquitously, hence without complaint) . . .

{BVS_096_01.13} . . . our possibilities to just a few.

{BVS_096_01.14} In dreams all probabilities are true.

{2}

{BVS_097_02.01} REFLECTING BACK FROM 25 TO 1 . . .

{BVS_097_02.02} it was in Buffy's dreams HER TALE BEGAN.

{BVS_097_02.03} Her ancestry of night met morning sun

{BVS_097_02.04} as she awoke (and I turned into fan).

{BVS_097_02.05} NO, DON'T FORGET that Buffy's dreams came first . . .

{BVS_097_02.06} . . . BEFORE WE HEARD her mother call her name

{BVS_097_02.07} identifying she (both blessed and cursed

{BVS_097_02.08} by slayerhood) whose face would bear that fame.

{BVS_097_02.09} BEFORE THE GIRL herself, her dreams imposed

{BVS_097_02.10} upon our viewing minds her fate's long line

{BVS_097_02.11} of destiny in visions of her foes.

{BVS_097_02.12} Though we could not interpret ev'ry sign . . .

{BVS_097_02.13} . . . that flashed before our eyes in that first scene.

{BVS_097_02.14} The title hinted what it all might mean.

{3}

{BVS_098_03.01} WHY AM I DANCING 'ROUND her dreams so long

{BVS_098_03.02} (three sonnets into this long stretch of verse)?

{BVS_098_03.03} BECAUSE there's many ways to get it wrong --

{BVS_098_03.04} so many ill conclusions people nurse . . .

{BVS_098_03.05} . . . assuming dreams can only echo facts

{BVS_098_03.06} in evidence extracted from real life.

{BVS_098_03.07} AS WHEN in Buffy's dream Wil's monkey-cracks

{BVS_098_03.08} in French implied Oz-talk she shared. No knife . . .

{BVS_098_03.09} . . . however, did Drusilla ever wield.

{BVS_098_03.10} THE QUESTION IS: WHAT CAN A DREAM REVEAL?

{BVS_098_03.11} Vague references to hurts that haven't healed?

{BVS_098_03.12} OR can they glimpses from the future steal?

{BVS_098_03.13} MY POINT IS, yes, some dreams predestinate.

{BVS_098_03.14} (Not simply random details duplicate.)

{4}

{BVS_099_04.01} I ONCE DREAMED of a coral snake and "tongs."

{BVS_099_04.02} WELL, NOT EXACTLY "TONGS" . . . I had no name

{BVS_099_04.03} for what I saw. Not something that belongs

{BVS_099_04.04} within that context. Nothing used to tame . . .

{BVS_099_04.05} . . . a snake's aggression. No, these "tongs" had bends

{BVS_099_04.06} that made no sense for something meant to hold

{BVS_099_04.07} a squirmy snake by pinching at the ends.

{BVS_099_04.08} I COULDN'T SEE why such "tongs" would be sold.

{BVS_099_04.09} THAT DAY I WENT to kill some movie time

{BVS_099_04.10} and walked into a show I had not planned

{BVS_099_04.11} to spend my life on, nor to waste a dime.

{BVS_099_04.12} Just why I picked it . . . DID NOT UNDERSTAND . . .

{BVS_099_04.13} UNTIL MY DREAMLAND KINKY TONGS were used

{BVS_099_04.14} to spread a drug lord's victim's mouth. CONFUSED?

{5}

{BVS_100_05.01} THOSE "TONGS" weren't meant to pinch, but open wide

{BVS_100_05.02} a human mouth. That's what those "bends" were for.

{BVS_100_05.03} To let a coral snake crawl deep inside

{BVS_100_05.04} the drug lord's victim -- keep an open door . . .

{BVS_100_05.05} . . . for venomous intrusion past the teeth

{BVS_100_05.06} kept spread by bends I had not understood.

{BVS_100_05.07} THIS LITTLE EPISODE I know bequeath

{BVS_100_05.08} to you to take whatever that you would.

{BVS_100_05.09} I DO KNOW . . . long ago God spoke through dreams.

{BVS_100_05.10} I do not claim myself a prophet now

{BVS_100_05.11} (I quickly clarify 'fore someone screams).

{BVS_100_05.12} But dreams can prophesy. (Don't have a cow.) {g}

{BVS_100_05.13} I NOW RETURN TO BUFFY'S WORLD at last

{BVS_100_05.14} to see what light two episodes have cast.

{6}

{BVS_101_06.01} IN BUFFY'S SECOND DREAM (no we're not done

{BVS_101_06.02} with dreams, but only with my private ones.)

{BVS_101_06.03} THE ONE WHERE Angel's walking in the sun.

{BVS_101_06.04} "You have to know what you see," his line runs.

{BVS_101_06.05} AND AT THAT MOMENT Jenny Calendar

{BVS_101_06.06} is lifting her black veil, WHICH BUFFY SEES . . .

{BVS_101_06.07} . . . then leaps awake to act. She can infer

{BVS_101_06.08} the meaning of the dream. It does not please.

{BVS_101_06.09} AND SOON her hand is wrapped 'round Jenny's throat

{BVS_101_06.10} who soon unveils her secret gypsy role

{BVS_101_06.11} in Angel's punishment. "That's all she wrote."

{BVS_101_06.12} (They turn on her because she's been a mole.) {smile}

{BVS_101_06.13} SO BUFFY casts her out, and Giles concurs.

{BVS_101_06.14} In Buffy's world, sometimes dreams can wear spurs.

{7}

{BVS_102_07.01} ENOUGH OF DREAMS (Good Lord! Thank God, you say.)

{BVS_102_07.02} We turn to love and sex and consequence.

{BVS_102_07.03} WHEN WOMEN "give it up," the guy must pay

{BVS_102_07.04} much more than it should cost. But, hey, we're dense. {ewg}

{BVS_102_07.05} THAT IS THE STORY, FOLKS, so don't blame me.

{BVS_102_07.06} 'Twas Joss, not I, that took ol' Angel's soul

{BVS_102_07.07} as payment for a loving night with B.

{BVS_102_07.08} You get your "happiness," you pay the toll.

{BVS_102_07.09} I HEAR some voices rising: "I protest

{BVS_102_07.10} this vile interpretation of the tale.

{BVS_102_07.11} You stupid 'guy!' You really need more rest.

{BVS_102_07.12} You claim to understand? Good Lord, you fail! . . .

{BVS_102_07.13} . . . It's all about the girl you idiot.

{BVS_102_07.14} Restate your case, or we'll all kick your b*tt.

{8}

{BVS_103_08.01} DEAR LADIES, PLEASE, DESIST. I will rewrite.

{BVS_103_08.02} Whatever you would have me say, I will.

{BVS_103_08.03} I don't compose this verse to start a fight.

{BVS_103_08.04} I'm not a slayer who is out to kill . . .

{BVS_103_08.05} . . . some guy who broke her heart and now must die.

{BVS_103_08.06} OOPS, THERE I GO -- I stepped in it again.

{BVS_103_08.07} BUT, golly gee, I cannot tell a lie.

{BVS_103_08.08} It surely seems that Joss does not like men.

{BVS_103_08.09} WELL, that was just a rhyme, but let it stand.

{BVS_103_08.10} THERE ARE NO good, strong men -- 'cept Riley's wife.

{BVS_103_08.11} WELL, BLOODY HELL . . . that's not what I had planned

{BVS_103_08.12} to say at all. This verse is truly rife . . .

{BVS_103_08.13} . . . with strange excursions 'cross my neurons' wires.

{BVS_103_08.14} What can you do when one of them misfires?

{9}

{BVS_104_09.01} I'M SURE THERE'S SOME TRUTH HIDDEN in that line,

{BVS_104_09.02} but Sam & Riley are a LONG way off,

{BVS_104_09.03} and so at last I'll promise to confine

{BVS_104_09.04} my final words to eps now in our trough.

{BVS_104_09.05} EPS TWENTY-FOUR and FIVE are ones all praise

{BVS_104_09.06} as keystones of the Buffyverse. Pure gold.

{BVS_104_09.07} I love Drusilla's ev'ry turn of phrase,

{BVS_104_09.08} and perfect, wounded Spike need not be sold.

{BVS_104_09.09} Sweet Buffy's broken heart broke my heart, too.

{BVS_104_09.10} And Xander's got a girl . . . and better plan.

{BVS_104_09.11} If cows have piles of hay, do they still moo?

{BVS_104_09.12} These were the episodes that Bronze a fan.

{BVS_104_09.13} BUT I'VE HAD VERSE TO WRITE, and so I did.

{BVS_104_09.14} Nine sonnets dashed in haste. What do you bid? {smile}

{ [THE END] # # #

HAIKU CODA

How long would it take
for one hundred fifty-four
sonnets . . . without rest?
[smile]
