PROLOGUE

DURING THE TWO-MONTH

PERIOD ... leading up to

the 01-02 season finale of

Buffy the Vampire Slayer . . .

something called "TEA TIME in L.A." was created

(and evolved) in the lastest incarnation of the

(official/UPN) Buffy online community enviornment:

The Bronze
R.I.P. 19 SEPT '02

WHAT WAS Tea Time in L.A.? Good question. [smile]

For the moment, let's just say it was (or became) a real-time,

verse-only interactive something-or-other. [smile]

WE HELD 50 TEA TIME hours: 4-5PM by a Los Angeles clock . . .

7-8PM by the clock in the Bronze (on New York time) . . .

and Midnight till one in London.

DURING THOSE 10 weeks I also managed

to compose 154 sonnets.

(That's how many Shakespeare wrote. Big whoop.[smile])

Actually rhetorical verse

in Shakespearean sonnet form.

This is the second time I'd done that. This time they were

Buffy sonnets. Good Lord! [smile]

BELOW IS A time machine (day-by-day index) with links to the

official UPN Buffy the Vampire Slayer (www.buffy.com) site.

The tid (thread identifier) numbers are shown here,

because that's how users of the current official site navigate.

(You won't need to know them -- just click on them, and a new

window will open containing the thread described.) So far,

the site managers have not deleted "old" threads. . .

but I'd be surprised if these didn't someday disappear . . .

probably not too far into the future.

For now, here they are.

ADD "VERSE ONLY" RULE

TUESDAY, MARCH 26

TEA TIME #7 The Powers That Tea Proclaim . . . "Verse Only" (iambic pentameter & haiku) buffy.com tid=49999(ERASED 6/29/02) INCLUDES forensicpoetry's supermarket encounter with James Marsters COMMENTARY:This is a major "shift point" in Tea Time. Many/most will refuse to participate under the CONSTRAINT of "iambic pentameter or haiku only." However, for the purposes of acquiring the discipline of rhetorical verse AND to limit the number of participants to an "orchestratable" number (allowing for elements of interactive story) this new RULE was necessary. Or at least "that's my story . . . . . . and I'm sticking to it." [smile]

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27 (PASSOVER/SUNDOWN)

SONNETS #9-12 ALL MUSICAL BUFFY INSPIRED BY BtVS EPISODE #107 (6.07) "Once More With Feeling" PART 1 buffy.com tid=50573(ERASED 6/29/02) PART 2 buffy.com tid=50575(ERASED 6/29/02)

TEA TIME #9 "Sonnet School for Slayers?" (I'm Your Watcher, Now) buffy.com tid=51074(ERASED 7/7/02) INCLUDES: After-hour follow-up with glow regarding writing vs performing verse. Or, more precisely, the much simpler "calculation" of where the accent goes when you're writing iambic pentameter . . . versus the much greater flexibility of how you read verse.

FRIDAY, MARCH 29

SONNET #15 BRING THE FUN IN buffy.com tid=51492(ERASED 7/7/02) INSPIRED BY BtVS Season 6 (in general)

TEA TIME #10 "Fun?" buffy.com tid=51994(ERASED 7/7/02)

SATURDAY, MARCH 30

SONNET #16 NORMAL AGAIN (AGAIN): IT'S ALL SO CLEAR AFTER THE ELECTRO-SHOCK buffy.com tid=52886(ERASED 7/7/02) (SATIRICAL SONNET)INSPIRED BY widely varying Viewer Opinions of BtVS #117 (6.17) "Normal Again"

TEA TIME #11 "New Topic Plan for Tea Time: EOTD (Episode Of The Day)" buffy.com tid=52998(ERASED 7/7/02) From this point forward, there will be a BtVS Episode Of The Day

SUNDAY, MARCH 31 (EASTER SUNDAY)

BtVS EOTD (Episode Of The Day) #1 (1.1) WELCOME TO THE HELLMOUTH

SONNETS #17-20 IN THE BEGINNING INSPIRED BY BtVS EPISODE #1 "Welcome To The Hellmouth" PART 1 buffy.com tid=53362(ERASED 7/7/02) PART 2 buffy.com tid=53363(ERASED 7/7/02)

TEA TIME #12 (ANNOUNCED) BtVS Episode #1 / (ACTUALLY) "Why post in verse?" buffy.com tid=53436(ERASED 7/7/02) DaLilBit spoke of Sylvia Plath and posted a Buffy acrostic of her own. COMMENTARY: (1) At this point the guest assumption is poetry rather than rhetorical verse (2)There will also be an ongoing "problem" of discussing an Episode of the Day . . . when only a few people may have access to tapes or DVDs and can refresh their memory. In any case, the benefit is that the topic of the day should be predictable for anyone who wants to prepare for discussion in advance.

MONDAY, APRIL 1 (EASTER MONDAY: C, UK)

BtVS EOTD (Episode Of The Day) #2 (1.2) THE HARVEST

SONNETS #21-24 ONCE MORE, WITH ADJUSTMENTS (Rewatching the Vampire Slayer #2) INSPIRED BY BtVS EPISODE #2 "The Harvest" PART 1 buffy.com tid=53901(ERASED 7/7/02) PART 2 buffy.com tid=53900(ERASED 7/7/02)

TEA TIME #13 ANNOUNCED TOPIC: BtVS#2 "The Harvest" / ACTUALLY "Does an EOTD make sense?" buffy.com tid=53937(ERASED 7/7/02) Having successfully scared away all participants (with verse-only) I talk valiantly with myself . . . until Mercie arrives at the last moment to post some verse in response to my sonnets of the day which had somehow been taken over by Katie Holmes. [smile]

TUESDAY, APRIL 2

BtVS EOTD (Episode Of The Day) #3 (1.3) THE WITCH

SONNET #25 WRITING THE BALLAD OF SMG buffy.com tid=55217(ERASED 7/7/02) INSPIRED BY a request posted in the Bronze for help writing a ballad about Sarah Michelle Gellar for an English class assignment.

TEA TIME #14 "A Very Special Tea Time - Writing the Ballad of SMG" buffy.com tid=56215(ERASED 7/7/02) INCLUDES a detailed analysis of the "rhythm & rhyme" of "Going Trough The Motions" from the Buffy Musical. COMMENTARY:The request for help in writing a "ballad" (song) turned my attention to the possibility (in the face of the "verse rebellion" [smile]) to see if rewriting the words to songs from the Buffy Musical might be a more popular form (especially for younger participants) and attract participants.

AND THEN . . . I got another idea.

TT Transient Interdimensional Portal Mystery Begins

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3

BtVS EOTD (Episode Of The Day) #4 (1.4) TEACHER'S PET

SONNETS #26-27 DESTINY buffy.com tid=58191(ERASED 7/7/02)

TEA TIME #15 A Transient Interdimensional PORTAL Materializes on Buffy's Beach buffy.com tid=59313(ERASED 7/7/02)

THURSDAY, APRIL 4 (BRONZE TECH. DIFFICULTIES/BTD) FRIDAY, APRIL 5 (BTD) SATURDAY, APRIL 6 (BTD) SUNDAY, APRIL 7 (BTD) (DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS, US) MONDAY, APRIL 8 (BTD)

ADD CORKBOARD

TUESDAY, APRIL 9

BtVS EOTD #5 (1.5) NEVER KILL A BOY ON A FIRST DATE

SONG GELLAR'S SO PRECOCIOUS (TO THE TUNE OF "GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS" FROM OMWF) buffy.com tid=60165(ERASED 7/11/02) INCLUDES RESPONSE: Song by yelnif - "Ballad of Forensic Poetry" also to the tune of "Going Through the Motions." COMMENTARY/NOTE: This was supposed to be for Thursday 4/4 Tea Time, but The Bronze had technical difficulties for several days.

SONNETS #28-29 SINGING LESSON (2)buffy.com tid=61131(ERASED 7/11/02)

QUOTE FROM: The Grace of Great Things Creativity is Dangerous buffy.com tid=62830(ERASED 7/11/02)

CORKBOARD #16 buffy.com tid=62979(ERASED 7/11/02) COMMENTARY: With Tea Time #16 we add a new associated thread - the Tea Time CORKBOARD - which is posted 3 hours earlier than the Tea Time (PORTAL) thread. It serves the purpose of both promoting the fact that the PORTAL will appear in a few hours and providing information such as the EOTD and links to the Sonnets posted that day. Where the PORTAL "ENDS" in one hour, the CORKBOARD is a 24-hour (one day) thread. Participants are encouraged to use it to discuss Tea Time (feedback etc) . . . but also for group "connection" (sharing quotes, stories, etc.)

TEA TIME PORTAL #16 (mislabeled #15) buffy.com tid=63041(ERASED 7/11/02)

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10

BtVS EOTD #6 (1.6) THE PACK

SONNETS #30-31 THE PORTAL & "THE PACK" buffy.com tid=63216(ERASED 7/11/02)

CORKBOARD #17 buffy.com tid=63892(ERASED 7/11/02)

(REFERENCE POST) SONNETIZED PORTAL DESCRIPTION buffy.com tid=65321(ERASED 7/11/02) COMMENTARY: This is sonnet #30 alone (without #31). I posted it a few times on Wednesday, and a REFERENCE copy 4/11. They are substantially the same (just some html adjustments). The reason for posting the PORTAL Description as a seperate piece is to keep the "thread header" smaller.

TEA TIME PORTAL #17 buffy.com tid=64774(ERASED 7/11/02) Something that holywater says . . . "inspires" me to create a villain (Big Bad) for the Portal. COMMENTARY: holywater "never forgave me" for not allowing free verse. [smile] But before she left, her participation inspired the next SHIFT.

ADD MISTER VERSCHIP AMBIGUOUS CHARACTER

THURSDAY, APRIL 11 (Mr. Verschip Wants A Ticket)

BtVS EOTD #7 (1.7) ANGEL

SONNETS #32-33 ANGEL (BtVS#7) THE GOOD/THE BAD buffy.com tid=65915(ERASED 7/11/02)

CORKBOARD #18 buffy.com tid=65912(ERASED 7/11/02)

TEA TIME PORTAL #18 (Mister Verschip) buffy.com tid=66254(ERASED 7/11/02)

FRIDAY, APRIL 12

BtVS EOTD #8 (1.8) I ROBOT, YOU JANE

SONNETS #34-37 BOOK BAD, CHAT BAD, NEW BAD, MY BAD INSPIRED BY BtVS EPISODE #8 . . . AND WITH THE WORST TITLE I EVER WROTE. PART 1 buffy.com tid=67039(ERASED 7/11/02) PART 2 buffy.com tid=67038(ERASED 7/11/02)

CORKBOARD #19 [ARCHIVE LOST] buffy.com tid=67415(ERASED 7/11/02)

TEA TIME PORTAL #19 buffy.com tid=67873(ERASED 7/11/02) I confuse yelnif with holywater. . . and thereby "apply the wrong expectation filter" . . . thereby ending up with a misjudgement that (rightfully) confuses (and upsets) yelnif. Only thing I know to do is compose an apology . . . in sonnet form. See #39 below. COMMENTARY: It's easy to "get your wires crossed" in the midst of a virtual interative environment. More to say on this point . . . later.

ADD (VERSE-FREE) TERRACE

SATURDAY, APRIL 13

BtVS EOTD #9 (1.9) THE PUPPET SHOW

SONNETS #38,39 #38 THE TALENT SHOW buffy.com tid=68308(ERASED 7/11/02) #39 MIS-EXPECTATION/APOLOGY TO YELNIF buffy.com tid=68309(ERASED 7/11/02)

CORKBOARD #20 buffy.com tid=68457(ERASED 7/11/02)

TEA TIME TERRACE #20 (Verse-Free Parallel Conversation Thread Cotemporaneous with Tea Time) buffy.com tid=68516(ERASED 7/11/02) COMMENTARY: A dry run of a new VERSE-FREE parallel thread for Tea Time. For it to work, it would have needed its own host.

TEA TIME PORTAL #20 buffy.com tid=68518(ERASED 7/11/02)

NOTE: ANNOTATIONS FOR DAYS BELOW

COMMENTARY: But at this point Tea Time in L.A. has reached

the form it will keep until the end of the "series" on 5/22/02.

There will be some plot twists, and "commericals" added . . .

however there are no real design changes beyond this point.

PARTLY that is because the design had reached a workable form . . .

BUT MAINLY it is because I had reached the limits of energy and

attention. I could make it to 154 sonnets . . . and I could

execute the design that evolved . . . but it would have been

beyond my own design specs (i.e., humanly possible) to design more.

What remained was the story that played out within that design.

That's what follows below.

SUSPENSE: Would the story resolve by "THE END"?

FOOTNOTE SERMON: Microsoft Rules

DEAR VIEWERS: For practical reasons, I have designed this page to

look "right" using Microsoft Internet Explorer. The fact that it looks

terrible on other browsers is not an accident. I will take the time to find

a non-Microsoft solution to this problem, but I want to put this up today.

You see . . . this is how they do it . . . Make you use Microsoft . . .

using the computer . . . to communicate . . . ultimately to get a small a

percentage on every transacation (what Mr. Gates refers to as a FIG

a cut . . . "a little piece of the action" . . . of everybody's action)

THEN they are going to get LITTLE SPEECHES like this one . . .

UNTIL everyone understands exactly what price we pay for

Microsoft's "convenience."

AMEN. [serious smile]

OH YEAH, about the color, [playful smile]

if you're going to preach a SERMON

. . . I think it really ought to be in purple prose. [ewg]

AND, BY THE WAY, did you know that Bill Gates' favorite author is

F. Scott Fitzgerald. . . and Fitzgerald once wrote to his daughter

Scottie saying that he was really a moralist at heart . . . and wanted

to PREACH to people . . . in some ACCEPTIBLE form . . . rather than

ENTERTAIN them. [no joke] Well, that's a bit overboard, maybe . . .

sometimes you really do just want to entertain. And, if you're going to

preach, you'd better sure as hell entertain.

Yada yada yada etc. [smile]

But anyway . . . [ewg] AGAIN NOTE: If you ARE using INTERNET EXPLORER . . . and the text is too small . . .You can pull down the VIEW menu on your browser and increase the text size. Right, Bill? [smile]
