ALL MUSICAL BUFFY
(a 4-sonnet sequence) [rhetorical verse in
Shakespearean sonnet form]
(1)ONCE
MORE WITH FEELING'S FIRST SONG won my
heart.
A balanced blend of action with a
song
in Whedon's perfect key -- both fun
and smart.
Yes, "Going Through The Motions"
came on strong.
BUT now I must admit,
the first time through
Once More With
Feeling, I was not quite pleased.
Too
many of the songs seemed like a stew
of
private thoughts -- while the plot's engine
seized.
BUT: sing while
slaying vampires keeps the flow
of
Buffy gasoline, and fires the
spark-
plugs of the joys we "watchers" all
well know --
when B.-style heart and humor
hit the mark.
A second viewing made me
like them all.
But still, beyond the first
song, came a fall.
(2) I BRING THIS UP
TODAY not to rehash
our various opinions of
those songs.
BUT RATHER: Should one
musical just flash
before our eyes -- one
King 'midst many Kongs?
I MEAN, I
think the musical form fits
the
Buffy evolutionary path.
Song
resurrects the tone we've loved --
reknits
the Buffy tapestry. And like
a bath . . .
. . . that's Spiked
<g> with many champagne sips -- a
blast.
Yes, wash 6th-Season sadness with
the fun
of musicals each week, until
the last
of Buffy's twisting marathon's
been run.
I hear Joss scream: "Good
Lord! Are you insane?
A musical each
week?!?! You should be
slain!"
